Who it is for
HR managers and advisers, people and culture leads, payroll staff, and business owners or managers who handle HR themselves.
HR teams write constantly: policies, position descriptions, induction packs, letters, survey summaries. Claude helps with all of it. HR teams also hold some of the most sensitive information in the organisation, so this half-day spends as much time on rules as on drafting.
Exercises use generic or anonymised material. For example, a small Hamilton accounting firm that needs a flexible work policy, or a regional food processor that wants a clearer seasonal induction pack. Participants then adapt the method to their own documents.
Employment decisions stay with people. Good faith under the Employment Relations Act 2000, and the Privacy Act 2020 rules on collecting, using and storing employee information, both apply when AI is involved. We show where Claude fits in a fair process and where it does not.
Before you start: A Claude account for each person. A Team plan suits HR best, because work stays under commercial terms and Projects can be shared. Bring documents that hold no personal information.
What we cover
- Policies in plain languageDraft or rewrite a policy from your notes and an existing version. Check it against your employment agreements, and ask Claude to list anything that needs a lawyer's or adviser's view.
- Position descriptions and advertsTurn a manager's rough notes into a clear position description and a fair advert. Ask Claude to flag wording that could put off good applicants or does not match the role.
- Induction packs in a ProjectKeep the handbook, health and safety rules and site information in one Project, and produce induction material for each role or season from it.
- Letters and difficult messagesDraft clear, respectful letters for routine matters, and prepare talking points for a hard conversation. A person reviews every word, and process letters follow your adviser's templates.
- Survey and feedback summariesSummarise anonymous survey comments by theme, with quotes, and check that no summary could identify a person in a small team.
- Rules for employee informationDecide what may never be pasted in, such as health details, disciplinary records and personal contact information, and which plan and settings any approved use requires.
We adjust the content to your team, and use your own documents and tasks for the exercises.

63.6% of employed New Zealanders, about 1,669,000 people, work in the desk-based occupation groups (in bold) where Claude helps most. Each town page shows the local share, so you can see how a rollout would size up where you are.

Questions about this course
Can we use Claude to screen CVs?
We advise against letting it rank or reject applicants. It can help write a fair advert and a clear set of criteria. People should read the applications and make the call, and the Privacy Act 2020 limits how applicant information may be used.
Is it safe to paste in an employee's details?
Not as a habit. Remove names and identifying details first. Use real information only if your organisation has approved the plan, the settings and the purpose.
We are a small business without an HR team. Is this still useful?
Yes. Owners and managers who handle HR themselves often get the most from it, because policies and letters take them the longest. We keep the examples practical for small teams.
