Who it is for

Lawyers and legal executives, in-house counsel, policy advisers, council planners, compliance officers, contract managers and anyone who reviews long or technical documents.

Long, careful documents are where Claude does its best work, and also where a confident wrong answer does the most damage. This day teaches both halves: how to get real value from Claude on a long agreement or a pile of consultation submissions, and how to prove each answer before relying on it.

Every exercise uses a document type the group already handles. A lease, a supply agreement, a district plan chapter, a draft policy, a set of public submissions. Participants learn to ask for quotes and clause numbers, to compare versions, and to keep a record of what Claude was given.

We also deal with the professional side. Privilege, confidentiality, client consent, the Privacy Act 2020 and, for public sector staff, the Official Information Act 1982 and the Public Records Act 2005 all affect what goes into a chat and what has to be kept afterwards.

Before you start: A paid Claude plan, ideally Team or Enterprise so the work sits under commercial terms. Documents used in training must be cleared for that use, or swapped for public examples such as a published district plan or a sample agreement.

What we cover

  1. Asking questions of a long documentUpload the document and ask narrow questions first. Require a quote and a clause or page reference with every answer, then check a sample by hand.
  2. Version comparisonGive Claude two drafts and ask for a table of every change, its effect, and which party it favours. Check it against your own redline and note what each method missed.
  3. Extracting obligations and datesPull notice periods, renewal terms, reporting duties and termination rights into a schedule. Build it as an artifact so the team can sort and filter it.
  4. Submissions and consultation analysisGroup a large set of submissions by theme, count positions, and trace every theme back to the submissions behind it. Spot-check the coding against a sample read by a person.
  5. Drafting from your precedentsLoad precedents, style rules and a defined-terms list into a Project. Draft a clause, a policy section or a briefing note that already follows house style, then mark it up as you would a junior's draft.
  6. Records, confidentiality and sign-offDecide what may be uploaded, which plan and settings that needs, and how to file the prompt and output with the matter or policy record. Agree who signs off, and what they check.

We adjust the content to your team, and use your own documents and tasks for the exercises.

Questions about this course

Can Claude give legal advice?

No. It can read, summarise, compare and draft, and it does those well when you check its work. The judgement and the professional responsibility stay with the qualified person who signs off.

Can we use confidential client documents?

Only if your firm or agency has approved the plan and the use, and the client position allows it. In training we use cleared or public documents. The day ends with your own written rule for live work.

Is this suitable for council and government staff?

Yes. Submissions analysis, plain-language rewrites and briefing notes are core exercises. We also cover how public records and official information requests apply to AI prompts and outputs.
