Retail in Tasman
For a store, an attractive product description is useful only when its claims match the catalogue. TheColab visits Tasman businesses to teach that source discipline. Bring a buyer and a customer-facing supervisor, then choose a cleared product sheet or policy that both can review.
Retail and wholesale have different roles in the local supply chain. The checked Tasman 2025 extract lists 378 retail geographic units and 165 wholesale units separately.1 Training can serve either kind of business while keeping its product records and customer promises specific.
Paid employees in retail went from 3,508 in February 2020 to 3,498 in February 2025 (−0.3%).

Local context
- The Loggers Shop is listed as a Brightwater forestry and outdoor supplier. Technical product context makes it a useful local reference for careful catalogue handling, without claiming any use of Claude by the shop.22
- Ilka Boutique and other independent shops appear in Māpua Wharf's business listings. Their mix of clothing, gifts and homewares gives a distinct setting for a generic product-information exercise.33
Organisations are named for local context only. No relationship with them is implied.

Where Claude helps retail teams
Keep approved catalogue context in a Project
A Claude Project can hold reference files and instructions.5 For a generic Māpua gift shop, provide cleared product sheets and a short style guide. Ask for descriptions that label missing details instead of guessing them. The buyer checks materials, dimensions and care wording directly before approving a draft for the shop.

Inspect a supplier's revised terms
Claude can work with uploaded documents.7 Practise comparing a permitted supplier note with the previous version, extracting delivery conditions and unresolved questions. Request the actual passage rather than a general conclusion. A purchasing manager confirms the commercial meaning and writes the question they need to take back to the supplier.

- Claude long document supplier review
Mock up a staff product guide
Use an Artifact to display a sample product guide.6 Give it synthetic catalogue entries, clear category labels and an area for unknown information. Ask shop staff to test how they would find a care instruction. Their feedback can improve the layout before any real catalogue or customer data is considered.
- Store training supervisor
- Claude Artifacts guide prototype
Simplify a reviewed store procedure
Inside a Project, draft a plain-language staff version of a cleared collection procedure.5 Include the manager's escalation contact and preserve exceptions from the original. The owner checks that simplification has not changed the policy. Use the draft in a practice handover, then keep the approved document available for difficult cases.

Flag incomplete catalogue exports
Claude Code supports building and testing scripts.8 A technical colleague can prototype a checker that reports empty product codes, duplicated entries and missing description fields. Use fabricated records with known defects. Review its behaviour before running it on an authorised export; the first version should report issues without changing catalogue data.

- Claude Code catalogue checks
Approve a new product description
- Select the supplier sheet and mark the fields that are approved for publication.
- Draft a description with an explicit list of absent product details.
- Ask the buyer to trace each claim to the sheet or a confirmed supplier response.
- Save the accepted copy and its source reference for future catalogue updates.

Retail in Tasman: questions
Can we practise on a public catalogue?
Use material you have permission to process, then choose a narrow product group. Public availability alone should not become an assumption about publishing rights. For the training task, staff can also work with synthetic product sheets that resemble their real categories.
Does Claude decide what a policy means?
Use it to organise wording and highlight exceptions for the owner. Have the owner interpret the controlling procedure and check the proposed staff version. A concise explanation is not proof that the policy has been understood correctly.
Is there national retail interest in AI?
Retail NZ's library includes education material on generative and agentic AI.4 That is a sector learning signal. It does not tell us which Tasman stores have adopted a tool or what benefit they achieved.
What happens after the product exercise?
Keep a small approved example set, including a case with missing information. Nominate who updates the reference sheets when suppliers change details. Test the next draft against that set before extending the process to more categories.
