Retail in Southland

A product description can sound helpful while silently adding a feature that the supplier never stated. Our retail lab starts with that problem. In a fictional Invercargill hardware shop, participants compare a short product draft with a supplier sheet and identify every unsupported claim. They then rewrite the copy around facts a staff member can verify.

The local customer mix matters. E Hayes describes hardware and engineering supplies for trade buyers, regional industry and the public, while Farmers' Invercargill Central listing covers household, beauty and fashion goods. These different settings help teams choose suitable exercises for specialist product questions and consumer-facing text.2,3

Paid employees in retail went from 6,915 in February 2020 to 6,784 in February 2025 (−1.9%).

Local context

  • E Hayes offers online shopping as well as a physical store. That combination gives local context for reviewing catalogue text before it moves between sales channels.44
  • Great South names retail sector challenges within its regional business plan. A practical training pilot can focus on the document tasks a store owner can inspect.11

Organisations are named for local context only. No relationship with them is implied.

Where Claude helps retail teams

  • Read a supplier catalogue for evidence

Use approved catalogue PDFs to practise Claude's document reading. Ask which passage supports a proposed specification, and request an unresolved-question list when the wording is unclear. Include a similar model name to test the comparison. The product specialist should check the original sheet before staff repeat a claim to a shopper.5

    • Product buyer
    • Long document and PDF analysis
  • Keep a retail writing Project

Build a Project with cleared product references and the store's writing instructions. Ask for draft copy with a separate list of factual claims for review. A generic Gore gift shop can practise adapting the same approved details for a shelf label and a web description. Preserve limitations that matter to the buyer in both outputs.5

    • Retail marketing coordinator
    • Projects with product reference files
  • Prototype a staff question card

Create an artifact that helps staff collect a customer's product requirements before asking the specialist. Use fields for intended use, known constraints and unanswered questions. Test it with incomplete information and check that it does not recommend an unsafe substitute. The reviewed tool should point staff to a qualified colleague when the question exceeds the source material.6

    • Store training lead
    • Artifacts for staff reference tools
  • Review a catalogue import script

A technical retailer can use Claude Code on a mock product-import repository. Ask it to add tests for missing SKU values and unrecognised unit labels. Inspect the changes and run the checks using invented products. Keep publishing and stock updates disabled while the developer evaluates the script against the business's normal review process.7

    • Retail systems developer
    • Claude Code for import validation

Approve a description from supplier evidence

  1. Select a cleared supplier sheet and identify its product model.
  2. Request a short draft with a separate claim checklist.
  3. Verify each claim in the supplier document and flag missing evidence.
  4. Let the product owner approve the text for the selected sales channel.

Retail in Southland: questions

Can our sales team learn without developers?

The catalogue and writing exercises use ordinary reference documents. Choose the coding lab only for staff who maintain imports or other store software.

Can we practise with our current supplier sheets?

Use documents cleared for the class and include a reviewer who knows the products. A public catalogue is an alternative when commercial attachments cannot be shared.

Will an artifact be ready for staff to use?

Treat the first artifact as a prototype. Review its instructions, test incomplete questions and check sharing controls before putting store information into it.6

Can you visit our Southland store office?

We deliver workplace sessions throughout the region. Arrange a quiet space where the team can examine drafts without interrupting customer service.
