Education in Southland
A useful resource starts with a learning goal and an approved source, not a request for an entire course. We teach staff to specify the audience, the concepts to preserve and the evidence they will check. The teacher then decides whether the draft helps the learner perform the intended task.
Projects provide reusable reference context, while artifacts support editable documents and interactive outputs.5,6 These features suit careful preparation and revision. A generic vocational trainer can practise making a reading activity from supplied course notes, without entering a learner's work or claiming the output has been tested in a classroom.
Paid employees in education went from 3,506 in February 2020 to 3,449 in February 2025 (−1.6%).

Local context
- SIT has Invercargill learning sites including its Main Campus, Downtown Campus and SIT Sound.1 Its published AI principles call for safety, transparency, fairness and course-specific guidance.3 Local training should begin with those institutional choices, not assumed vendor access.1,3
- James Hargest College describes separate junior and senior campuses.2 That provides a local example of why a resource's audience must be stated clearly before a teacher asks AI to change its level or language.2
Organisations are named for local context only. No relationship with them is implied.

Where Claude helps education teams
Prepare a course-resource Project
Load authorised course notes and a learning-outcome statement into a Project. Ask Claude for an activity that uses the supplied concepts and list any extra facts it introduces. The trainer checks accuracy and chooses which parts to keep. Include instructions to flag missing curriculum detail rather than invent what the programme expects.5
- Teacher or vocational tutor
- Projects for course references
Check alignment across course documents
Compare a supplied outcome, an activity and a proposed assessment brief. Request an evidence table showing where each requirement is addressed, with gaps left explicit. A programme lead reads the underlying passages and decides whether the task assesses the intended learning. This document exercise does not approve an assessment or judge a real student's work.5
- Programme leader
- Long documents and file comparison
Revise a practice artifact
Create an editable practice guide from approved notes, with worked explanations and questions. Ask for a revision that changes the reading level while preserving the concept. Inspect the answer key yourself and check that the revised task remains useful. If an interactive artifact is suitable, test it on generic examples before letting learners depend on its feedback.6

Build a resource checking tool
A technical educator can use Claude Code to develop a small checker for broken links or missing resource headings in artificial course files. Define its expected findings, inspect the code and test intentional errors. Keep it separate from the learning-management system until the institution approves the access and someone accepts responsibility for maintaining it.7

Inspect a drafted learning activity
- State the learning goal and select an approved reference passage.
- Request a draft with its assumptions and answer guide visible.
- Check subject accuracy and the difficulty of each question.
- Approve the activity through the institution's normal teaching process.

Education in Southland: questions
Can trainers practise with unit or course outcomes?
Supply the current outcome text and your approved programme guidance. We can compare a proposed activity with those documents, but the programme reviewer must decide whether the result meets the institution's requirements.
Does SIT's AI policy mean it uses Claude?
The published principles establish local attention to responsible AI.3 They do not identify this vendor or give another provider approval to use it. We use the policy as context for practical governance questions.
Should AI assess a learner's work in the workshop?
Start with invented examples to learn how a draft rubric or explanation can be checked. The Ministry centres professional judgement and authentic evidence.4 Any real assessment application must follow the institution's authorised process.
Can the session include education office staff?
Administrators can bring general policy notes or blank communication formats. TheColab can visit a Southland school or provider and separate their document exercises from the teaching-resource work, while keeping a common checking method.
