Farming and horticulture in Southland
A farm plan can contain maps, actions, supporting records and questions for an adviser. Environment Southland publishes a guide, checklist and example plan that make useful public training material. Start with those documents, then move to business records that the owner has cleared for use.1
TheColab teaches the reading and writing work around farming, growing and forestry. In a generic Winton farm-office exercise, participants compare a contractor's written scope with a list of work requests. They ask Claude to identify omissions and quote the relevant passage. The manager checks the source before turning that draft into a message.
Paid employees in farming and horticulture went from 8,315 in February 2020 to 7,783 in February 2025 (−6.4%).

Local context
- The Southern Dairy Hub near Invercargill studies farm systems under southern soil and weather conditions. Its local research setting is a useful reminder to keep location and assumptions visible in any AI summary.22
- Southern Forests' Gore office and mapping services broaden the training examples beyond dairy administration to forest-owner reports and harvesting correspondence.33

Where Claude helps farming and horticulture teams
Build a property document workspace
Use a Claude Project for approved farm instructions, public guidance and a document index. Project knowledge gives chats a common reference base. In practice, label each file with its version and purpose, and ask the draft to name which source supports each action. Keep a separate list of questions that the material cannot answer.4
- Farm administrator
- Projects and reference files
Read an unfamiliar plan carefully
Work through a long farm plan with a defined question: which records does this section refer to? Ask for a table of passages, records and unresolved points. Open every cited passage beside the draft. This exercise builds a reading habit; an adviser still decides how the plan applies to the property and its activities.1,4
- Farm owner or environmental adviser
- Long documents in a Project
Make a staff reference artifact
Ask Claude to turn approved office instructions into an editable artifact for seasonal staff. A generic nursery might use a packing checklist with fields for product, destination and supervisor sign-off. Test it against an incomplete order and a changed destination. Remove any suggestion that the checklist gives permission to operate equipment or apply products.5
- Grower or nursery supervisor
- Artifacts for editable reference tools
Compare contractor attachments
Give Claude the current scope and a revised supplier PDF, then request changes grouped by materials, exclusions and responsibility. For a forestry exercise, include an unresolved access question so the group can see whether it is preserved. Have a reviewer inspect both attachments and write the final request for clarification. Project files support this document-based comparison.4

- PDF comparison with project context
Turn a plan section into a checked office task
- Select a public plan section and record its version.
- Ask Claude to list the supporting records mentioned in that section.
- Compare each proposed task with the original wording.
- Assign an owner to unresolved questions and save the reviewed task list.

Farming and horticulture in Southland: questions
Can the session use our own farm plan?
Yes, with the owner's approval and suitable handling of sensitive content. Send an outline of the document task first so the exercise has a clear review point.
Will Claude decide what our property must do?
Ask it to help locate wording and prepare questions. Take property-specific interpretations to your adviser or Environment Southland, which provides local planning resources.1
Do forestry staff fit this course?
Forest managers can practise source-based owner updates, attachment comparisons and outstanding-question lists. Southern Forests' published service mix gives those tasks a local context.3
Can you teach at our Southland office?
We come to your workplace across Southland. Choose a room where participants can open their approved files and compare drafts with a reviewer.
