Farming and horticulture in Canterbury
Start with a task you can inspect: finding the evidence behind a farm-plan action. Environment Canterbury describes Farm Environment Plans as covering risks to soil, water and nutrients, with supporting plans and records. Claude can help organise that material, but your consent and adviser remain the reference for what applies.2
We teach Projects for keeping approved documents together, then practise asking questions that require a source location and an explicit gap when evidence is absent. Claude's project knowledge accepts documents and instructions. Shared organisational projects are available on Team and Enterprise, subject to the organisation's controls.4
Paid employees in farming and horticulture went from 16,511 in February 2020 to 16,597 in February 2025 (+0.5%).

Local context
- Kirwee's Belmont Farm combines cropping with lamb finishing. Turley Farms has crop operations in Temuka and elsewhere on the Canterbury plains. Southern Packers describes controlled onion storage as part of Turley's operation. These examples explain the range of production records a training exercise can address; they are not claims of Claude use.11
- Lincoln Agritech's research includes AI-supported digital agriculture. That is evidence of local research capability, rather than a measure of how many growers use a chatbot.33
Organisations are named for local context only. No relationship with them is implied.

Where Claude helps farming and horticulture teams
Build an evidence inventory
For a generic Kirwee cropping business, load an approved farm plan and de-identified records into a Project. Ask Claude to list each action, its supporting file and any missing evidence. Review the links yourself. Keep an empty entry when a record is absent, rather than allowing a plausible description to fill the gap.4
- Farm administrator
- Projects and file knowledge
Compare supplier instructions
Read lengthy equipment manuals and supplier instructions together. Request a comparison organised by model, document revision and unanswered question. The operator checks every proposed difference against the originals before using the result. This exercise teaches careful document reading without asking Claude to decide a treatment, chemical application or machine setting.4
- Operations supervisor
- Long documents in Projects
Make a crop handover map
Create an artifact that shows how an observation moves from the field notebook to the office record and then to a supervisor. Use your approved process, including the person who can resolve a discrepancy. Claude supports diagrams and small interactive tools in artifacts when the required capabilities are enabled. Test the map with a real staff question.5

- Artifacts for process diagrams
Draft an adviser briefing
Use separate chats within the farm Project to prepare a brief about open record questions. Ask for reported observations, document references and issues needing advice as distinct sections. Remove speculation about environmental performance. A useful brief lets the adviser see what you know and what you still need to establish.4

Check a farm-export utility
A developer can use Claude Code to inspect a small tool that checks column names in farm exports. Work on sample files in a separate folder. Require clear messages for missing columns and preserve the original export. Review the changes and run known examples before considering use with operational records.6

- Claude Code
Rehearse a source-led farm briefing
- Choose an approved plan excerpt and a small set of records that contain a known gap.
- Request an evidence table with file references, then inspect each entry alongside the original.
- Correct the draft with the farm manager and save the prompt, approved brief and unresolved questions separately.

Farming and horticulture in Canterbury: questions
Can we practise with our own farm plan?
Yes, if your business approves the material. Supply the current revision and remove sensitive details. Use the exercise to identify questions for review, with the council guidance beside you.2
Does a Project share everything with staff?
Sharing depends on your account and project settings. Check the intended audience before adding files, and confirm which members can view or edit the knowledge.4
Will an artifact become our official induction guide?
Only after your supervisor reviews it against the working process. Treat the artifact as an editable draft and give the approved version an owner.5
Can TheColab teach at a rural workplace?
