Claude for manufacturing documents in the Waikato

Manufacturing in Waikato

Fonterra's Waikato addresses run from Te Rapa and Crawford Street through Hautapu, Te Awamutu, Morrinsville, Waitoa, Waharoa, Tirau and Lichfield1. Gallagher's Hamilton headquarters holds over 850 office and manufacturing people and is where the company says the product is designed and made2. Tatua manufactures at Tatuanui6. AFFCO Horotiu, on that site since 1915, is registered for over 80 export markets and counts robotics in its process improvements5.

Kinleith's paper machine stopped at the end of June 2025. Oji had expected about 230 roles to go3. RNZ later put departures at about 150 on 30 June, with pulp continuing4. A change like that rewrites procedures. Claude can draft from the old document and the decision note. It cannot approve the new one.

Paid employees in manufacturing went from 24,723 in February 2020 to 25,192 in February 2025 (+1.9%).

Local context

  • Horotiu is described as HACCP and AusMeat certified, with online pH checks and x-ray chemical-lean measurement.5
  • Pastoral farming and exotic forestry remain the main productive land uses behind the dairy, meat and pulp chain.7
  • Regional activity was softer in the year to March 2025, down 0.5 per cent, with construction, mining and utilities named as the drivers rather than manufacturing.8
  • Gallagher says its Hamilton site takes its technology from inception to final product, so design and factory teams work on one site.2

Organisations are named for local context only. No relationship with them is implied.

Where Claude helps manufacturing teams

  • Specifications side by side

Put the customer specification and your current process in a Project. Ask for gaps, each one tied to a page. The quality lead accepts or rejects the list. Unreferenced gaps are discarded.

    • Quality and technical staff
    • long documents
  • A procedure from a walk-through

Notes or a transcript become a numbered procedure in the house style. Versions stay in the Project so the next line does not fork a private copy.

    • Supervisors
    • Projects
  • An audit board

An artifact can lay audit actions out by owner and date for a meeting. After the meeting, the real tracker is updated by a person. The artifact is the agenda, not the record.

    • Quality coordinators
    • artifacts
  • Label text against a template

For a technical colleague, Claude Code can check exported label text against a template and flag missing fields. They review the script. It does not print the label.

    • Technical staff

  • A source-linked briefing

Research mode can collect public market or packaging notes into a briefing with links. A specialist decides which notes apply to the product on this site.

A procedure revision with the source attached

  1. Add the approved procedure and the change note to the Project. Leave drafts out.
  2. Ask for a revised procedure that marks each change and points at the note.
  3. Walk the changed steps on the line or with the person who owns the process.
  4. Only then replace the controlled copy, using the approval path you already have.

Manufacturing in Waikato: questions

Can the whole crew share one Project?

Share it with the people who maintain procedures. A Project full of old drafts will be quoted back at you. Archive superseded files first.

Who should learn Claude Code?

Someone who already edits scripts or label data. Supervisors get more from Projects and long documents.

Will you come to the plant?

Yes. Training can be in the site office anywhere in the Waikato, or remote when the team is split across towns.

What is a good sample file?

One specification you are allowed to use in the room, and one procedure that is due for review. Redact customer names if the contract requires it.

Does Anthropic deliver this course?

No. TheColab delivers it. Anthropic has not accredited or endorsed the training.
