Health in Waikato

Waikato Hospital provides emergency, birthing and specialist mental health services in Hamilton. Braemar adds a private surgical setting to the city's health sector.1,2 We refer to these providers as local employers, without implying they use Claude or have booked our courses.

For a fictional community provider, the first exercise might compare an old reception procedure with its approved replacement. Participants ask Claude to show changed instructions and cite the relevant passage. Project knowledge can hold the permitted documents, but the administrator must select the current source before a draft becomes staff guidance.6

Paid employees in health went from 24,188 in February 2020 to 28,002 in February 2025 (+15.8%).

Local context

  • The University of Waikato has previously offered an AI for Health course and introduced digital anatomy teaching.3,4 These developments show local attention to technology and skills; a general-purpose assistant still needs a carefully defined administrative purpose.3,4

Where Claude helps health teams

  • Compare reception procedure versions

Upload approved sample procedures to a Project and request a change table organised by staff action. Include document references and flag instructions that conflict. Ask the service manager to inspect the original passages. The exercise should expose a missing approval or unclear step rather than blend both versions into a new procedure that nobody has authorised.6

    • Service administration manager
    • Projects and long documents
  • Check a plain-language information draft

Give Claude a public service description and ask for a more readable version with the same scope. Then compare the rewrite sentence by sentence against the supplied text. Look for changes to eligibility, urgency or what a service provides. A qualified content owner approves the final wording, especially if the original includes clinical information or patient preparation instructions.6

    • Patient information editor
    • Long document review
  • Show an administrative referral path

Use an artifact to explain a fabricated internal document-routing process. Display the office role, required paperwork and the point where an incomplete request returns for clarification. Test it with a sample that lacks an attachment. Keep diagnosis, urgency scoring and treatment recommendations outside this teaching tool; its job is to explain the administrative steps a reviewer supplies.7

    • Service coordinator
    • Artifacts
  • Validate a reporting file structure

Technical staff can ask Claude Code to build a checker for synthetic activity exports. Define required headings and reject unexpected free-text fields before testing. Review the code's error handling and inspect its output on deliberately malformed files. Do not connect the workshop utility to patient systems. The developer should document what the checker can and cannot establish.8

    • Health reporting developer
    • Claude Code

Approve a revised administrative instruction

  1. Select a public or synthetic procedure and identify its content owner.
  2. Request a comparison that preserves the original document locations.
  3. Review each proposed wording change for altered meaning.
  4. Save the approved version through the provider's normal document-control process.

Health in Waikato: questions

Can reception and support staff attend?

They can practise document routing, service descriptions and draft correspondence with fabricated details. Choose material that their role is allowed to handle. A content owner should join the review so the exercise reflects the provider's actual administrative process.

Will we need real patient notes?

Public documents and invented records are enough to teach the method. The health privacy code sets boundaries for health information handling.5 Replacing a name alone is not a sound reason to assume a sensitive narrative is suitable.

Can an artifact guide clinical triage?

Keep the starter artifact focused on administrative routing. Anthropic supports editable tools and documents, but a feature does not validate clinical use.7 The reviewer should reject any generated step that assigns urgency or recommends treatment.

How is training delivered to regional providers?

TheColab offers on-site delivery across the Waikato region and can discuss remote participation for dispersed teams. Public workshop days provide a separate introduction. Agree the permitted documents and the provider's review owner before the practical work begins.
