Manufacturing in Wellington

A specification can look clear while leaving the workshop with conflicting instructions. In training, we ask Claude to expose those conflicts and show the evidence behind its answer. TheColab delivers at your workplace, bringing design, production and office staff into the same exercise so they can agree how a reviewed draft becomes an approved record.

Lower Hutt's manufacturing examples include Fraser Engineering's fire and rescue equipment and Metco's design-to-finished-product service.2,3 These are real local employers, not training customers. A generic engineering workshop gives us room to test document handovers without disclosing a customer's design or claiming access to an employer's internal systems.

Paid employees in manufacturing went from 13,154 in February 2020 to 12,317 in February 2025 (−6.4%).

Local context

  • Manufacturing accounts for 12,317 employees in the supplied Wellington regional Stats NZ aggregation for 2025.1 Local capability discussion is current: an August 2026 chamber event brought AI, construction data and RFID manufacturing into the same programme.4 Its publicity shows regional interest, but does not establish factory-wide AI adoption.1,4

Where Claude helps manufacturing teams

  • Prepare a specification review in a Project

Put an approved product brief and reference glossary in a Claude Project. Document context and instructions are supported Project features.6 Request a list of unresolved requirements with the relevant source passages. For a fictional Hutt Valley fabrication job, separate dimensional questions from finish requirements and commercial assumptions before a supervisor reviews them.

    • Design coordinator
    • Projects and long documents
  • Compare revision notes against the procedure

Supply a controlled procedure and proposed changes as distinct files. Ask Claude to identify passages affected by the revision and draft questions for the quality lead. Use the originals to verify every claimed difference. Keep the approved procedure unchanged until its owner completes the normal review and release process.

    • Quality documentation lead
    • Long-document analysis
  • Prototype a shift-handover display

Describe a simple Artifact with sections for open issues, equipment status and the next action owner. Artifacts can contain interactive tools and editable content.7 Populate it with invented production notes, then check whether the next shift can distinguish completed work from a hold. Keep the prototype separate from live production controls.

    • Production supervisor
    • Artifacts
  • Build a checked reporting-file helper

A developer can use Claude Code to draft a small utility that checks a practice CSV for missing job identifiers or invalid status values. Claude Code works across files and can run development commands.8 Review its changes, test rejected inputs and document the output before considering any connection to production reporting.

    • Reporting developer or technical analyst
    • Claude Code

Trace a specification question to its source

  1. Select an approved demonstration brief and mark the version and document owner.
  2. Request an issue register with a source passage for every proposed question.
  3. Let the engineer check each passage and remove questions based on unsupported assumptions.
  4. Return the checked questions to the usual approval process and retain the review notes.

Manufacturing in Wellington: questions

Is this useful for a small fabrication shop?

Start with a common handover or product-brief task. Staff do not need a large document library to practise naming the source, finding uncertainty and checking a draft.

Can Claude release a quality procedure?

Assign release authority to the existing document owner. Claude can help prepare the comparison, but your reviewers must decide whether the proposed wording matches the actual process.

Should engineers attend the same session as administrators?

A shared exercise is useful where a requirement passes between office and workshop. Engineers can explain what makes an instruction usable, while administrators practise preserving those details in the draft.

What is required for the code exercise?

Bring a developer, an approved development environment and a fictional reporting file. If those are unavailable, choose the document and Artifact exercises and arrange technical work separately.

Where can our production team learn?

We can run the session on site across Wellington, including the Hutt Valley and Wairarapa. Public workshop days suit individuals who want to learn the basic document workflow first.
