Education in Otago

The University of Otago's main campus and Otago Polytechnic's Dunedin presence anchor the region's tertiary education work. Both publish AI expectations. Those policies give us a concrete starting point for a staff workshop: check the approved task and information before asking the tool to produce a resource.1,2,3,4

For a generic Otago vocational team, use a fictional course outline and a cleared reading pack. Participants ask Claude to identify mismatches between the stated learning goal and a proposed resource. An educator then decides what belongs in the lesson and what needs a separate assessment discussion.

Paid employees in education went from 11,194 in February 2020 to 11,367 in February 2025 (+1.5%).

Where Claude helps education teams

  • Give a course Project controlled context

Project knowledge supports a collection of reference files and instructions. Build a practice set from cleared course aims, a public reading and the team's resource format. Ask Claude for a teaching outline that identifies where each idea came from. The educator checks alignment, missing prerequisite knowledge and any statement that goes beyond the provided references.5

    • Claude Projects
  • Compare long teaching documents

Use a document review exercise to compare an existing resource with a proposed course revision. Ask for changed concepts and questions about material that no longer aligns. Keep the current learning goals visible. Staff review the passages in the original files before deciding whether a resource needs revision, rather than accepting a general summary of the difference.5

    • Programme leader
    • Long documents and Project references
  • Make a practice resource artifact

Artifacts can present editable learning material or a small interactive exercise. Prototype a revision activity using fictional examples and questions written by the tutor. Test the proposed answers against the reading pack and check whether the task teaches the intended skill. Keep it separate from graded assessment until the relevant staff have approved its purpose and content.6

    • Tutor or learning designer
    • Claude artifacts
  • Develop a resource-checking utility

A technical education team can use Claude Code on an isolated resource repository. Practise a change that flags missing headings in fictional course files. Claude Code is able to edit files and run commands in a development environment. The developer reviews the patch, tests varied examples and checks accessibility implications before any generated resource reaches learners through the institution's publishing process.7

Review a fictional learning resource

  1. Confirm the course goal and the information allowed in the exercise.
  2. Load the cleared references into the practice Project.
  3. Ask for a resource outline with evidence and unresolved questions.
  4. Check the content with a tutor who knows the subject.
  5. Keep a review note explaining the approved use of the finished resource.

Education in Otago: questions

Does the course authorise Claude for student work?

No training session can approve an institution's data or assessment use. Staff must check the local tool list and the relevant policies. We can teach a public-document exercise while the institution decides whether another workflow is permitted.3,4

Can school staff use these methods?

The preparation and review methods can suit school staff with an approved adult account and appropriate sample material. Use the school's own rules for learners and information handling. Choose a teaching resource whose accuracy a subject specialist can check.

How do we handle assessment guidance?

Keep the assessment owner's decision explicit. The Polytechnic policy calls for written guidance on permitted AI use for each assessment. A draft resource should not silently change those permissions or make a practice task look like an approved assessment.4

Can you visit an Otago teaching team?

We can teach at your Otago workplace and arrange remote learning for dispersed staff. Public workshop days may also help individual educators. Ask a programme or policy owner to join preparation so the exercise matches the team's approved learning task.
