Education in Wellington

The Ministry of Education's report on Aotea College in Porirua describes a school survey, a staff AI group and changes to assessment guidance.3 The local lesson is practical: shared expectations matter when staff and learners use AI. Training can help a generic department test its instructions and compare results across subjects.

TheColab teaches schools, tertiary staff and training providers at their workplace across the Wellington region. Remote sessions can include colleagues from different campuses. Bring approved course outcomes, a public reading and a sample resource you own. We work through how to supply context, inspect the draft and decide which parts require teacher judgement.

Paid employees in education went from 24,877 in February 2020 to 26,163 in February 2025 (+5.2%).

Local context

  • Massey lists its Wellington campus in Mount Cook.2 Alongside the Porirua secondary-school example, this shows distinct local education settings. The regional development plan also identifies skills, talent and education as economic enablers.1 Course-document and staff-capability exercises should reflect the provider's own purpose rather than assume a single regional approach.1,2

Where Claude helps education teams

  • Check alignment across a course pack

Put approved learning outcomes, an activity brief and a sample rubric in a Claude Project. Uploaded documents can supply context for focused Project conversations.6 Ask where the activity gives learners a chance to practise each outcome and where the rubric assesses something else. A course designer verifies the references and chooses any changes to the learning sequence.

    • Course designer
    • Projects and long document analysis
  • Create a checked resource artifact

Build a document artifact from an authorised reading and a stated learning purpose. Claude artifacts can hold substantial documents separately from chat.7 Request a simpler practice version, questions and a source-linked answer guide. The teacher checks that the vocabulary change has not altered the concept, then removes misleading examples and adjusts the task for the class.

    • Teacher or tutor
    • Document artifacts
  • Prototype an interactive practice activity

Ask Claude for an artifact that lets a learner explore a fictional scheduling problem. Artifacts support small interactive tools.7 Define the intended concept, valid inputs and feedback boundaries. Test wrong answers and ambiguous entries with a colleague. A teacher should be able to explain the underlying reasoning before deciding whether the prototype is suitable for learning.

    • Learning technology lead
    • Interactive artifacts
  • Inspect a course-resource repository

A technical staff member can use Claude Code to check a sample set of resource files for inconsistent references or broken internal links. It can read code, edit files and run commands.8 Review its proposed changes and test them in a local copy. A subject specialist verifies any content change before the material is released to learners.

Review a resource against its learning purpose

  1. Select an approved reading and state what learners should understand after using it.
  2. Ask Claude for an activity and the passages that support its answer guide.
  3. Have a colleague attempt the activity and mark confusing or unsupported parts.
  4. Revise the resource and retain the teacher's review with the source reading.

Education in Wellington: questions

Is this staff training or a student lesson?

These workshops teach educators and support staff to prepare and review resources. Staff can use the exercises to discuss their own policy, then decide separately how learners may use AI within the approved course approach.

Can our department compare its rubrics?

Use rubrics the provider permits you to share and ask for a referenced comparison. A Project can hold those documents for related conversations.6 Subject leads should resolve differences rather than accept a generated judgement about fairness.

What does an artifact add to resource drafting?

An artifact gives staff a separate document or interactive output to inspect and revise.7 Try the activity as a learner would, then check its examples and explanations against the authorised source material.

How can a school-wide approach remain consistent?

Agree the allowed inputs, learning purpose and review responsibilities before the exercise. Aotea College's published response included a staff group and shared guidance.3 Your own provider should maintain its instructions and review them when practice changes.
