Education in Nelson
Nelson's education setting includes NMIT's city campus and Nelson College. NMIT's 2025 account describes IT students working with the AI Sandbox on community projects, including an app-generator prototype. That local experimentation gives educators a concrete starting point for discussing how a promising draft becomes a checked learning resource.1,2,3
TheColab can deliver a staff workshop at your Nelson campus or school. Give Claude a permitted course outline and a fictional learning task. Projects support reference knowledge and instructions, which can keep the draft tied to the intended learning goal. Ask the assistant to explain where its proposed activity relies on the supplied material, then have the teaching lead inspect it.6
Paid employees in education went from 2,042 in February 2020 to 2,007 in February 2025 (−1.7%).

Local context
- NMIT has published a responsible AI use policy approved in 2026. Nelson College also identifies SchoolDocs as its policy platform. Those are distinct institutional contexts: a workshop should use the participating provider's current rules rather than presume one local policy covers every educator.2,42,4
Organisations are named for local context only. No relationship with them is implied.

Where Claude helps education teams
Develop a lesson from its references
Place a cleared course outline and source reading into a Project. Ask Claude for an activity that teaches the stated concept, with a note showing which source supports each explanation. The tutor checks content and adjusts the challenge for the group. Project context supports the drafting exercise, while the educator retains responsibility for the learning sequence and its suitability.6

- Projects
Review a long handbook change
Compare a fictional learner handbook with a proposed revision. Request a table of altered instructions and unresolved terms, with passages for review. Long reference files can sit within a Project. Ask student-support staff to check that the shorter explanation preserves the conditions in the source, especially where a convenient summary might hide an important exception.6
- Student support coordinator
- Long document review
Build a practice learning artifact
Use an artifact to prototype an interactive sorting exercise based on invented examples. Artifacts support documents and small interactive tools. Have the educator test the expected answers, misleading hints and the response to an unclear entry. Keep the prototype out of formal assessment until the teaching team agrees its purpose and checks the institution's rules for AI-supported materials.7

- Artifacts
Teach review of AI-written code
An IT tutor can use Claude Code in a sample repository to produce a small change, then ask students to inspect its behaviour. Define the expected outputs before generating code. Review the diff and run tests containing deliberately awkward inputs. Claude Code provides development capability; the teaching task is to make evidence of correctness visible rather than reward an unexamined result.8

Turn a draft activity into a reviewed resource
- Choose a learning goal and the reading that supports it.
- Ask for an activity with a separate explanation of its evidence.
- Test instructions and expected answers with a colleague before classroom use.
- Record the approved version and how the educator used AI in preparation.

Education in Nelson: questions
Can non-technical educators make an artifact?
An educator can request a draft document or small interactive learning tool without writing its initial code. Artifacts support those output types.7 The educator still needs to test content, instructions and expected responses before sharing the resource with learners.
Should we use NMIT's policy in every workshop?
NMIT's published policy is evidence of local governance, not a substitute for your provider's rules.4 Bring the policy that applies to your staff and identify which preparation or assessment tasks it permits before selecting the practice materials.
Can Claude check assessment authenticity?
Do not base an authenticity judgement on the assistant's impression of writing. Use the workshop to practise explaining an activity and checking its source content. Keep actual assessment decisions in the provider's established process with the responsible educator.
What should an IT tutor contribute?
Bring a safe sample repository and known expected behaviour. Claude Code can assist development work.8 The tutor can guide participants through reviewing a generated change and demonstrating whether it passes the intended tests, including cases that challenge the obvious answer.
