Professional services in Canterbury
BDO's Christchurch practice combines financial advice with an Ashburton presence, and Duncan Cotterill lists property, construction and primary-sector work among its local interests.1,2 Canterbury Tech also connects software and specialist technology businesses.4 These sources support a broad training audience: advisers, analysts, document specialists and the developers who help them deliver services.
A fictional Christchurch consultancy provides a useful starting exercise. Its team has an agreed scope, meeting notes and a draft report that makes a claim unsupported by either. Claude Projects can hold the approved reference set and instructions.5 Staff practise identifying that gap before asking for a polished paragraph. The exercise tests judgement as well as drafting.
Paid employees in professional services went from 52,785 in February 2020 to 58,045 in February 2025 (+10.0%).

Local context
- BDO publishes a national policy based on approved AI tools and human oversight.3 It does not prove a particular local deployment. For a Canterbury firm, the practical lesson is to set a review standard and data boundary before sharing an AI drafting routine across client teams.3
Organisations are named for local context only. No relationship with them is implied.

Where Claude helps professional services teams
Create an engagement evidence Project
Load permission-cleared scope notes, a writing guide and relevant public references into a restricted Project. Ask Claude for a report outline linked to that evidence. Require a separate list of unsupported conclusions. The engagement lead decides whether more research or a client question is needed before drafting begins.
- Consultants and engagement leads
- Projects with document knowledge
Compare a revised report with its brief
Work through a long sample report section by section. Request a table showing each promised deliverable, the passage that addresses it and any qualification. Check the comparison against the brief yourself. Pay particular attention to scope exclusions, because a convincing summary may conceal a commitment the firm never accepted.
- Senior reviewers
- Long document comparison
Make a client briefing artifact
Claude artifacts can provide editable documents or interactive tools.6 Build a fictional briefing that lets a reviewer inspect assumptions beside each conclusion. Use public information or made-up inputs. Test whether a colleague can distinguish evidence from proposed advice without reading the entire chat that produced the draft.
- Advisory managers
- Artifacts for review
Inspect an internal report utility
Use Claude Code with a test repository to review a sample export-to-report utility.7 Ask it to explain the transformation, propose tests and show the changes for developer review. Include missing fields and unexpected categories in the test data. Keep live client files and production access outside that exercise.

A scope-to-report quality check
- Select a fabricated consultancy brief and a draft containing an unsupported recommendation.
- Set Project instructions to flag evidence gaps and preserve scope limits.
- Request a comparison with document references, then inspect the relevant passages.
- Revise the draft after the reviewer resolves the gap, and retain the approval in the engagement record.

Professional services in Canterbury: questions
Can we use a client report as the exercise?
Use a public report or a version cleared for this purpose. Removing a name may leave recognisable transactions or circumstances. The engagement owner should approve the complete file set before the organiser uses it in a shared session.
How should we separate different matters?
Give each exercise its own approved knowledge set and invited reviewers. Claude documents Project visibility choices for team work. Check those choices against your firm's access rules rather than rely on the name of a project to keep material private.5
Does every adviser need Claude Code?
No programming is needed to review documents or edit artifacts. Include Code when developers need to maintain a parser, reporting utility or other internal service. Scope that technical session around a test repository and specific review outcomes.
Can a practice outside Christchurch arrange training?
Our trainers travel to Canterbury workplaces, including regional professional offices. A firm can also send staff to public workshop days. Choose a team session when you need a shared matter-review standard and account decisions made together.
