Professional services in Manawatū-Whanganui
BDO's Palmerston North office provides accounting and advisory services, and FMG publishes offices in Palmerston North, Feilding and Dannevirke. These examples show the regional service network; they are not accounts of our training work or of those firms' AI use.1,2
TheColab offers workplace sessions for advisers who read complex files and explain their conclusions. Start with a generic Feilding consultancy preparing a scope of work. Use fictional facts, a permitted precedent and an experienced reviewer. The exercise follows the document from initial questions through to a checked draft, so staff can see exactly where professional judgement enters.
Paid employees in professional services went from 11,042 in February 2020 to 10,768 in February 2025 (−2.5%).

Where Claude helps professional services teams
Keep an engagement's reference material focused
A Claude Project can hold authorised engagement instructions and reference files.6 In the lab, separate the fictional scope, report style and open questions. Ask Claude to draft a structure that names the missing evidence. The engagement partner checks whether the proposed work actually answers the client's question before any detailed wording is prepared.

- Claude Projects
Read changed terms alongside the originals
Compare a permitted precedent with a fictional revised agreement. Ask for changed passages and their possible implications, while keeping interpretation clearly labelled for review. Work through long documents by clause heading. A professional then checks the exact wording and decides which differences matter. The exercise should expose uncertainty rather than turn it into confident advice.
- Senior adviser
- Long document review
Show a proposal as an editable artifact
Use an artifact to present a scope table with deliverables, assumptions and exclusions. Claude supports document artifacts.7 Have a colleague challenge the draft as if they were the client: what has been promised, what input is needed and what happens if the facts change? Revise the draft visibly before returning it to the firm's normal approval process.
- Practice development lead
- Claude artifacts
Develop a document-quality check
For an IT or consulting practice, Claude Code can assist with a small checker for report headings or missing references. Its developer tools can edit files and run commands.8 Use fictional reports in a separate test folder. Inspect the changes, then test a document that should fail. This checks formatting discipline, not the correctness of professional advice.

Review a fictional advisory proposal
- Write the client's question using invented details.
- Supply the approved scope precedent and drafting instructions.
- Ask for a proposal with assumptions shown beside deliverables.
- Challenge each commitment against the supplied evidence.
- Save the reviewed wording with the engagement owner's approval.

Professional services in Manawatū-Whanganui: questions
Can accountants and consultants attend together?
They can practise the same evidence and review habits. Give each profession its own fictional document so the examples reflect its responsibilities.
Will Claude determine the advice we give?
The professional retains that judgement. Use generated text to explore a structure or identify questions, then develop and verify the conclusion yourself.
How much material should we bring?
Choose a focused task with an approved precedent and enough context to judge the result. A large unstructured folder can make weak assumptions harder to spot.
Does every adviser need developer training?
Document-focused staff can begin with Projects and artifacts. The code-checking exercise suits the person who already maintains the practice's internal tools.
