Transport and logistics in Nelson

Port Nelson handles both containers and bulk cargo, with seafood, forestry products, pip fruit and wine among its exports. That service mix offers a useful setting for learning how to read a bundle of freight instructions without losing the conditions attached to each movement.1

TheColab comes to your Nelson workplace for practical training. Start with an approved booking pack or fictional shipment. Put reference instructions into a Claude Project, then ask for an exception list with the passage behind each finding. Projects support saved knowledge and instructions; the exercise teaches staff how to test the answer against the actual document.5

Paid employees in transport and logistics went from 1,289 in February 2020 to 1,367 in February 2025 (+6.1%).

Local context

  • QuayConnect's Pelorus tool provides supply-chain status and inventory visibility. Treat that as evidence of local digital freight work, with any training export kept separate from the live operational system. The regional transport plan also identifies weather-related access loss as an issue worth including in a disruption exercise.2,32,3

Where Claude helps transport and logistics teams

  • Read a booking pack for contradictions

For a generic Nelson freight office, supply a booking email, warehouse instruction and service agreement as long documents. Ask Claude to distinguish a confirmed requirement from an unanswered question. Require file names and quoted passages in the review table. The coordinator then checks the original pack and resolves conflicts with the relevant person. Project files provide the reference context.5

    • Freight coordinator
    • Projects and long documents
  • Explain a shipment exception

Use an approved fictional incident record to draft separate messages for a shipper and an internal supervisor. Ask for the confirmed position, what remains unknown and who needs to respond. Keep the reference material inside the shipment Project. Review every promise about arrival or cargo condition before the message leaves the office. Claude can reuse the Project's instructions for these drafts.5

    • Customer service lead
    • Project instructions
  • Make the escalation path visible

An artifact can display a draft flowchart or small interactive tool. In training, sketch the route from a missing booking detail to a supervisor decision using fictional events. Include a stop where the available evidence is incomplete. Ask dispatch staff to walk through the display and identify ambiguous steps before a process owner approves the wording.6

    • Operations supervisor
    • Artifacts
  • Prototype document completeness checks

A developer can use Claude Code to prepare a checker for empty reference fields in sample freight files. Define expected behaviour before asking for code. Test a normal record, a missing value and an unexpected column. Review the changes in the development repository; an experiment must not acquire live dispatch access simply because its first test passed.7

Practise a freight document review

  1. Select a fictional booking with a deliberate conflict between instructions.
  2. Label each source file and set the desired exception-table format.
  3. Compare Claude's findings with the original passages and resolve missing evidence.
  4. Save the corrected prompt beside the reviewed example for dispatch training.

Transport and logistics in Nelson: questions

What should our freight team bring?

Choose a sanitised instruction pack with a known error and its corrected version. That lets participants compare an AI draft with a result the team already trusts. Supply the reference files only after the document owner clears them.

Can we connect Claude directly to Pelorus?

No integration was verified in this research. Pelorus is a local example of freight visibility, not a promised Claude connection.2 Start with a permitted sample export and scope any later integration with your systems team.

Does the workshop need a developer?

Dispatch staff can practise document reading and message drafting without programming. Invite a developer if the session includes Claude Code, which works with software tasks.7 Keep that exercise in a separate development environment.

How will we assess a useful result?

Check whether the draft identifies the planted conflict, preserves uncertain facts and points to the right passage. Count corrections during your pilot without promising a fixed saving. The most useful output is one the next shift can inspect.
