Health in Nelson

Nelson's health context spans public hospital services, private surgery and palliative support. The Ministry's register lists Nelson Hospital's medical, surgical, maternity, mental health and children's services. Nelson Tasman Hospice describes care across several settings, while Manuka Street Hospital provides a local private surgical context. These service descriptions support administrative examples, not claims of AI adoption by those providers.1,2,3

TheColab can teach your team at its Nelson workplace. Use a public service guide or a fictional policy pack for the first exercise. Claude Projects support reference files and instructions, making them useful for practising source-led drafting. Set a rule that every policy interpretation must point to the passage a reviewer needs to check.5

Paid employees in health went from 4,171 in February 2020 to 4,330 in February 2025 (+3.8%).

Local context

  • NRDA's 2024 Sandbox showcase included health AI research. That report indicates local exploration but does not verify routine clinical deployment. Choose a training task with a clear document owner, such as explaining an approved service process to an administrator.44

Where Claude helps health teams

  • Compare administrative policy versions

Supply a fictional current policy and a proposed revision as long documents. Ask Claude for a table separating changed wording, unchanged conditions and questions needing an owner. Have the administrator inspect the exact passages before circulating the table. Project reference material can support this comparison, while the workshop teaches participants to preserve exceptions that a short summary may omit.5

    • Quality administrator
    • Long documents in Projects
  • Write a service-guide draft

Put approved non-clinical service information into a Project. Ask for a plain-language explanation of how to make a general enquiry, with uncertain details left for staff to confirm. The service owner checks contact routes and tone. Project instructions can keep the writing focused on the supplied guidance; do not add patient-specific treatment advice to this administrative exercise.5

    • Service coordinator
    • Projects with writing instructions
  • Show an induction route

Create an artifact that maps a fictional new administrator's route through orientation, document access and supervisor support. Artifacts can present a separate document, diagram or interactive tool. Test the map with a colleague unfamiliar with the process and look for unclear handoffs. Keep it labelled as a training draft until the responsible manager approves each instruction.6

    • Workforce development lead
    • Artifacts
  • Check a public-content export

For a technical team, ask Claude Code to prepare a small test that flags missing headings in sample service-guide files. Use public text and invented file paths, with no patient data in the development repository. Inspect the code and test known failures before distribution. The feature supports software work; a useful prototype still needs the provider's technical review.7

Check a policy-summary exercise

  1. Select a fictional policy revision with a deliberately changed exception.
  2. Ask for a comparison linked to the relevant source passages.
  3. Confirm that the draft preserves the exception and identifies its owner.
  4. Record the approved summary beside the source version used in training.

Health in Nelson: questions

Can reception staff use these exercises?

Reception and coordination teams can practise general enquiry replies and document navigation. Give them an approved service guide and a fictional question. The review should check whether the answer stays within published information and directs uncertain matters to the right person.

Will we need patient records for training?

Public guidance and a made-up policy pack are sufficient for the proposed session. The health information code applies to identifiable health material.8 Ask the privacy lead to assess any later proposal to include real records rather than assume names alone are the issue.

Does the local research prove clinical use of Claude?

The Sandbox report mentions health AI research without establishing a Claude clinical service.4 The proposed workshop therefore starts with administrative reading and writing, and tests each output against a reference that staff can inspect.

What should the quality lead review?

Check the source version, missing exceptions and any wording that could change a service instruction. Ask the author to identify where the draft differs from the approved document. Keep the sign-off with the policy owner before staff use the revised explanation.
