Transport and logistics in Wellington

Wellington freight has a specific coordination problem: road movements meet port operations and Cook Strait services. CentrePort describes that strait connection as critical to its supply chain, while KiwiRail's replacement-ferry announcement links rail freight with Wellington and Picton port planning. Those links make document-based handover exercises relevant here.1,2

TheColab teaches the reading and writing that surrounds a movement. Bring an approved carrier agreement, a blank exception form or a synthetic job export. We can come to your Wellington region workplace, or teach remotely. Participants practise with source material and leave with prompts they can inspect and maintain.

Paid employees in transport and logistics went from 8,339 in February 2020 to 7,636 in February 2025 (−8.4%).

Local context

  • CentrePort's 2025 update reports a dedicated mobile network for safety and productivity technology, plus completed Seaview wharf work. These are concrete local digital investments; they do not establish that a carrier uses Claude. Our exercises use the same need for accurate operational records.11

Where Claude helps transport and logistics teams

  • Compare the handover clauses

Put an approved service agreement and its revision in a Claude Project. Ask for a table of changed collection, notification and claims clauses, with the original wording beside each finding. Projects accept document context for focused chats.4 A transport manager then checks whether each change affects the dispatch instructions. Leave unresolved clauses as questions for the contract owner.

    • Transport manager
    • Projects and long document review
  • Write a factual exception account

Give Claude synthetic driver notes, depot observations and a sample customer email. Request an event sequence that separates observations from assumptions. Keep the draft in an artifact so the supervisor can review its wording independently of the chat. Artifacts support separate document outputs.5 The final report should state what remains unknown and who will confirm it.

    • Dispatch supervisor
    • Document artifacts
  • Practise a disruption decision tree

Use an artifact to sketch a small internal training aid for a missed transfer. Supply your approved escalation paths and ask the prototype to display the next contact for each example. Claude can create interactive tools as artifacts.5 Test contradictory and incomplete inputs. An operations lead checks the result before staff rely on any instructions during a shift.

    • Interactive artifacts
  • Check a freight export with code

A technical analyst can ask Claude Code to inspect a sample CSV reconciliation project and propose checks for repeated job references, blank delivery fields and inconsistent dates. Claude Code reads code, edits files and runs commands.6 Review the proposed changes, run them on fabricated records and compare the exception list with a manual check before using an approved export.

Rehearse a missed transfer

  1. Select a fabricated transfer with conflicting depot and driver notes.
  2. Add the approved escalation procedure and request a sourced event sequence.
  3. Have the dispatcher mark unsupported statements and resolve missing details.
  4. Save the reviewed report and update the prompt with the errors found.

Transport and logistics in Wellington: questions

Which freight documents should we bring?

Choose a current procedure you can share and a blank report form. A synthetic missed-transfer scenario gives staff enough detail to practise evidence checking without carrying customer identifiers into the workshop.

Can the office learn without writing code?

Yes. Dispatch and commercial staff can work with Projects and document artifacts.4,5 Reserve the code exercise for someone who understands the export format and can test the reconciliation logic.

Will Claude confirm a sailing or delivery slot?

Treat a generated operational detail as unconfirmed until the carrier or dispatch system verifies it. A document exercise can help prepare a question, but the person controlling the movement must confirm the actual booking.

Which first task should a Wellington freight team try?

Select a report that staff already review and can compare with an approved example. Judge the trial by factual corrections, missing fields and the quality of the handover, rather than the length of the output.
