Government in Nelson
Nelson City Council lists an AI Sandbox briefing in its 2025 meeting records. NRDA's earlier Sandbox report also describes AI assistance in the council's Long Term Plan process. These sources show local public-sector interest and a specific planning example, without identifying a Claude deployment or claiming council support for this training.1,3
TheColab can bring a workshop to your Nelson office. Choose public consultation material or a fictional report pack cleared by the agency. Claude Projects provide reference files and instructions for ongoing document work. Define what an acceptable briefing must show: its source, the limits of the evidence and the questions that remain for a responsible officer.6
Paid employees in government went from 1,135 in February 2020 to 1,180 in February 2025 (+4.0%).

Local context
- NRDA is council-controlled and operates across Nelson Tasman with funding from both councils. A draft that uses its material must preserve that regional scope. The GCDO's public-service guidance provides a reference for accountability and transparent AI use; each organisation should assess it alongside its own policy.2,42,4

Where Claude helps government teams
Trace a briefing to its evidence
Put a public report and a fictional officer brief into a Project. Ask Claude to map each proposed recommendation to the source passage and identify unsupported steps. Long reference documents give the exercise its evidence base. The policy officer should verify the mapping and decide what further analysis is needed before the draft can enter an advice process.6

- Projects and long documents
Compare versions of an internal guide
Supply a made-up procedure and a proposed revision, then ask for changed obligations and unresolved wording. Require file references beside every finding. Project instructions can define the review format and keep interpretation separate from quotation. Have the process owner check whether the draft has changed who must approve an action, especially where a shorter explanation appears easier to follow.6
- Service process owner
- Project instructions and file comparison
Prototype a consultation-review display
Build an artifact that groups fictional submissions into themes and lets a reviewer inspect the supporting text. Artifacts can present interactive tools as well as documents. Test whether a dissenting view remains visible and whether the display obscures ambiguity. Keep the prototype labelled as an experiment until reviewers agree its method, limitations and role in the consultation process.7

Check a draft briefing pack with code
A developer can use Claude Code in a sample repository to detect absent source fields in invented briefing records. Define the expected failures and review the generated change before running it. Test on synthetic inputs with deliberate omissions. Claude Code supports development tasks; deployment in an agency system requires the technical owner's normal approval and a separate access assessment.8

Prepare a reviewable public briefing
- Agree the public question and collect the cleared source documents.
- Ask for a claim-to-source table before requesting recommendations.
- Check the geographic scope, contrary evidence and missing information.
- Have the accountable officer approve the briefing and retain its review record.

Government in Nelson: questions
Can a public consultation pack be used?
Start with material the agency has cleared for the selected tool. Claude Project files can provide the reading context.6 Decide which parts need redaction and how reviewers will inspect the original submissions before creating an exercise that groups them.
Does the council briefing show support for this workshop?
The public record establishes that a council AI briefing occurred. It does not establish endorsement of TheColab or a particular Claude service.1 The workshop examples are proposed learning tasks for an organisation to assess against its own needs.
Which policy should set the training boundary?
Use the participating organisation's current AI and information-handling policies. The GCDO guidance offers a public-service reference framework.4 Ask the responsible owner how that framework applies to the proposed task before approving the learning material.
What should reviewers do with a plausible recommendation?
Check each supporting passage and look for evidence that challenges the conclusion. Ask whether regional material has been mistaken for Nelson-only evidence. The reviewer should amend or reject unsupported advice and leave a clear record of the final decision.
