Health in Taranaki
In a fictional community clinic, a change to reception arrangements affects the staff guide and the public appointment sheet. A manager asks Claude to identify every passage needing review. The exercise teaches how to trace a change through documents, mark uncertainty and hand the result to the service owner for approval.
TheColab provides practical Claude sessions for health and social service staff across Taranaki. We begin with administration tasks selected by your organisation. Reception leads, policy owners and technical colleagues can practise together, using public documents or a cleared sample pack that contains no real patient details.
Paid employees in health went from 5,784 in February 2020 to 6,799 in February 2025 (+17.5%).

Local context
- Taranaki Base Hospital publishes wayfinding information for its new East Wing and departments. Public directions give a local example of content that must stay aligned with actual facilities.11
- Health NZ's report on expanded residential mental health rehabilitation describes updates to policies and procedures. It shows why service change needs controlled document review; it does not demonstrate Claude adoption.22

Where Claude helps health teams
Trace a policy revision
Use a Claude Project to hold approved versions of a non-clinical procedure and a change brief. Projects provide a document knowledge base.4 Ask for a register of changed passages, unresolved conflicts and source references. A policy owner checks the original documents, decides the wording and records the approved revision outside the AI workspace.

Review a long staff guide
Ask Claude to inspect a selected long guide for administrative instructions that depend on an outdated service arrangement. Document context supports this kind of focused review.4 Request the relevant passage rather than a free-standing rule. In the workshop, include a misleading appendix so the reviewer can practise distinguishing current instructions from historical background.

Prototype a reception orientation aid
Create an artifact that presents fictional reception tasks and escalation contacts as a simple interactive checklist. Editable artifacts can become small working tools.5 Test whether a new staff member can follow it and find the responsible role. Keep clinical triage, medication instructions and patient-specific advice outside the prototype; a service lead approves the administrative content.

Validate a sample reporting extract
With Claude Code, a technical staff member can draft a script to check column names and missing categories in an invented administrative export. The tool supports script development and testing.6 Inspect the code before running it. Use a disposable input copy and examples with blank fields so the resulting report does not conceal incomplete records.

Review a service change before publication
- Select a fictional reception change and a sample staff guide with its version clearly marked.
- Request affected passages, source locations and questions for the service owner.
- Check the proposed wording against the current operation and obtain the responsible review.
- Publish the approved document through your usual process and retire obsolete copies.

Health in Taranaki: questions
Can reception staff use Claude safely in training?
They can practise on invented service arrangements and approved public information. Confirm the allowed inputs with your organisation first, and reserve any patient-data proposal for privacy review.3
Will you build a clinical assistant?
This workshop centres on administrative procedures and checked public information. A clinical system would require its own governance, validation and approval; a document exercise is not evidence that those requirements are met.
What should the document owner check?
Check the source version, exceptions and any instruction that changes who performs a task. Ask Claude to identify passages in the Project, then make the approval decision against the actual controlled document.4
Can our technical colleague attend?
They can work on the sample export checker while administration staff test the outputs. Claude Code supports code and test work, but the organisation retains responsibility for deploying a utility.6
